Here is how one family genealogist describes the move from Virginia to Maryland in the mid-1600s. | ||
"..... the Chews seemed to have been hounded for being Quakers and the Governor of VA wanted them to leave. Gee, in the 1600s, don't you think there was enough space. Anyhow, the Governor of Maryland invited them to his state. The Chews accepted and moved. Then .... the Quaker church threatened excommunication to any members who where slave owners. The MD Chews were the states largest slave owners -- although perhaps the most benovelent -- as they treated them with kindness and fairness. Many slaves they gave their independence, only to have them end up as charity cases, so they kept them on -- sometimes paying them."
