| Very little was known about the other children of William Paca Chew until the research done by Tommy Carter uncovered several of them. Of the seven who were living when their father died, it appears that six survived to adulthood. Our relative John Hamilton Chew is covered in the main text. Below are his siblings: - Thomas C. Chew (1843-1908), stayed in El Dorado and was "a highly respected citizen of El Dorado and Union County." He had two sons, Thomas Jr and W.D. Chew. W.D. became a lawyer and while in his early 20s was elected to the House of Representatives. He later became an oilman and moved to Shreveport, LA.
- William Douglas Chew (1846-1866) died shortly after the end of the Civil War at age 20 of unknown causes. Click here to read a moving epitaph for Doug which appeared in the El Dorado Eagle.
- Fannie Chew (1849-1929) became Mrs. N. V. Gray of Jacksonville, AR.
- Martha (Mattie) Chew (1850- ?) married Wesley.W. Cornish, lived in Ozark Township AR and had a son named Winton.
- Col. Samuel Randolph Chew (1855-1925) became a well-known lawyer in Van Buren and Fort Smith, AR and was commissioned a colonel in the Arkansas State Militia. He had two sons, Robert Chew of Little Rock and Fay Chew of New York. Click here to read his biography from the Centennial History of Arkansas and his obituary, which has a number errors, including the name of his father.
- Lafayette (Fay) Chew (1857- before 1925) first moved to St. Louis where he worked for Rice Stichs Inc., whatever that was.
Four other children listed in the 1850 census for which we have no more information: Sarah E. Chew (1841-????); Mary Rathall Chew (1845--????); Pleasant Chew(1848-????). A Robert Chew, age 13 (1856-???) is listed in the 1870 census but then never mentioned again. | |
